    1. Who was the scout who scouted this player?
    2. Where did he go on vacation prior to signing?
    3. How were the other players dressed?
    4. How many roommates did he have?
    5. Did the roommates speak English?
    6. Who were some of the speakers presented to the new players?
    7. What is a typical day like at training camp?
    8. Where is Dodgertown – the home of the Dodgers
    9. Did you have to listen more closely to this interview than you would if you were familiar with the person or their accent?
    10. Who was more difficult to listen to – the interviewer or the interviewee?

2.  Audience and presenter interaction

This exercise highlights the importance of 'body language' and non-verbal cues in communicative interactions.   

Working in pairs   

1a) Student A describe to student B a nice meal you had recently - build up a picture of sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell.

1b) Student B respond without interest or enthusiasm, or even silence.

1c) Now evaluate your effect on one another, concentrating on your body language.   Record your impressions - student A trying to interest student B; student B rebuffing. Write a brief summary of your results for report 1.   

 

SWAP

2a) Student B describes to student A a meal which did not turn out well   - again concentrating on the five senses.   

2b) This time student A is attentive, sympathetic and interested.

2c) Now evaluate your effect on one another's body language and note them - does student B give more detail because of   student A's encouragement? And so on ... Write a brief summary of your results for report 1.
